What is Coenzyme Q10?

What is Coenzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10, otherwise called CoQ10, is an important element that helps power your cells. The human body produces CoQ10 naturally, unfortunately with time and aging, its production decreases. Fortunately, in these modern and medically advanced age, you are able to get CoQ10 through supplements and foods. Illnesses like heart disease, brain disorders, diabetes, and cancer are normally associated with low levels of CoQ10. It isn’t evident whether low levels of CoQ10 cause these diseases or are a result of them. One thing is for sure: a lot of research has uncovered that CoQ10’s has a wide scope of benefits. Here is all you have to think about CoQ10. The mitochondria are accountable for creating vitality. They shield cells from oxidative damage and disease-causing bacteria or viruses. As CoQ10 production decreases as you age, older people seem to be deficient in this compound.

Some other causes of CoQ10 deficiency include;

  • Nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin B6 deficiency
  • Genetic defects in CoQ10 synthesis or utilization
  • Increased demands by tissues as a consequence of disease
  • Mitochondrial diseases
  • Oxidative stress due to aging
  • Side effects of statin treatments

Research has shown that CoQ10 plays several key roles in your body. One of its primary functions is to help generate energy in your cells. It’s involved in making adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which involved in energy transfer within cells.

Its other important role is to serve as an antioxidant and protect cells from oxidative damage. Excessive amounts of free radicals lead to oxidative damage, which can interfere with regular cell functioning. This is known to cause many health conditions. Given that ATP is used to carry out all the body’s functions and oxidative damage is destructive to cells, it is not surprising that some chronic diseases have been linked to low levels of CoQ10. CoQ10 is present in every cell of your body. However, the highest concentrations are found in organs with the greatest energy demands, such as the heart, kidneys, lungs and liver.

The following is a list of the 9 main benefits of CoQ10.

  1. CoQ10 has been shown to protect brain cells from oxidative damage and reduce the action of harmful compounds that can lead to brain disease.CoQ10 help treat heart failure by improving heart function, increasing ATP production and limiting oxidative damage.
  2. The antioxidant properties of CoQ10 help improve sperm quality and reduce the decline in the number and quality of eggs in women.
  3. When applied directly to the skin, CoQ10 can reduce sun damage and increase antioxidant protection. Supplementing with CoQ10 may also help decrease the risk of skin cancer.
  4. Supplementing with CoQ10 prevent and treat migraines, as it increases mitochondrial function and reduces inflammation.
  5. Exercise performance can be affected by oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. CoQ10 help lower oxidative damage, promote exercise capacity and decrease fatigue.
  6. Supplementing with CoQ10 help increase insulin sensitivity and improve blood sugar levels.
  7. CoQ10 plays a critical role in the protection of cell DNA and cell survival, both of which are strongly linked to cancer prevention and recurrence.
  8. CoQ10 has been shown to protect brain cells from oxidative damage and reduce the action of harmful compounds that can lead to brain disease.
  9. CoQ10 can reduce oxidative damage and inflammation that results in diseases of the lungs.

Since CoQ10 is fat-soluble, it is recommended to take it with food or use products that combine it with oils to improve its absorption. Supplementing with CoQ10 appears to be well tolerated by individuals and has low toxicity. CoQ10 is found in some foods, especially organ meats. Also, it seems that it’s as equally well absorbed through foods as it is through supplements.

Shaklee has a product that can provide you with the sufficient daily dosage of CoQ10 needed by the body to properly function. Coq-Trol Plus by Shaklee is different from the rest;

18th Century Poisonous White Faces!

18th Century was an era of pale faces, heavily rouged cheeks, big hair and beauty marks for Europeans aristocracies. The changes of pre-present day life perpetually incurred significant deterioration on the wellbeing and appearance of eighteenth century Europeans; their countenances were regularly filled with smallpox scars, their teeth rotting, their gums collapsed from lost teeth, and their stride uneven from youth rickets. The one way for both men and women would hide the defects were to wear a thick white paste on their face to cover any imperfections, which often involved using highly toxic cosmetics. Snowy temples and bosoms, jet black thin brows, blood red lips and brilliantly intense red cheeks. What exactly did the men and women achieve the most desirable look of that century?

For centuries, the palest white is more than just a makeup or a coverup of their smallpox scar. Instead, the pale white makeup was all about status; it suggested wealth and absence of hard labor compared to commoners who worked the fields and get sunburn. This became even more pronounced in the 17th and 18th when trendy men and women progressively depended on it as a fashion trend into making their complexion much more pale and whiter. How did they achieve this? It could be achieved by using one of the many face creams and washes available in their market which promises to whiten and bleach the skin. One advertisement made for a chemical wash promised its consumer that it’ll get rid of all deformities, such as ringworm, morphew, sunburn, scurf, pimples, pits or redness of the smallpox, while giving the skin a lasting and extreme whiteness; or bright and fair is the word we use in this 21st century.

As we can see, bright and fair complexion has been a craze for centuries but more on personal preferences and not because of status. Men and women now lean towards sunscreen to protect their skin to avoid being sunburn, maintain skin youthfulness and delay skin aging, and to protect from the harmful ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation that can lead to cancer. Moreover there are tons of skin care and cosmetics companies that came out with whitening and brightening face wash, face creams and face oils that helps can help heal facial scars; such as pimples, chickenpox or scratches, some are also marketed as anti-aging creams or serums containing retinol. Retinol is a the active ingredient in anti-aging product which is a vitamin A compound, the first antioxidant to be widely used in non-prescription wrinkle creams. Antioxidants are substances that neutralizes free radicals because unstable oxygen causes molecules to break down skin case and causes wrinkles. As our time advances, more and more products made are less harmful and made safe. It actually heals and maintains the health of our skin. If the skin is naturally beautiful because of consistent skin care regime, there will be no need for a thick white makeup paste made from lead, right?

Lead? Yes, the main ingredient of the infamous heavy white foundation that all European aristocracy are so fond of is lead. The lead mixture are slathered all over the face, bosom and in order to heighten the effect, more like contouring in our days if you will, ladies painted blue veins on their bosom to make their skin appear paler than their normal skin colour. The more harmless ingredients in the preparation of these white makeup includes rice powder, vinegar, hartsthorn, gum Arabic, and bismuth subnitrate which is still being used in modern paints. Nevertheless, the most popular facial cosmetics had lead in them due to its desirable opaque qualities. An example recipe for the white face paint in those days are as follows (but please do not attempt it and use this product because it is highly damaging and corrosive to the face);

Steep the lead in the pot of vinegar, and rest it in a bed of [horse] manure for at least three weeks. When the lead finally softens to the point where it can be pounded into a flaky white powder [chemical reaction between vinegar and lead causes lead to turn white], grind to a fine powder. Mix with water, and let dry in the sun. After the powder is dry, mix with the appropriate amount of perfume and tinting dye.

Of course, this was a highly poisonous to the wearer over time. Lead poisoning can happen if a person is exposed to very high levels of lead over a short period of time. When this happens, a person may feel:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipated
  • Tired
  • Headachy
  • Irritable
  • Loss of appetite
  • Memory loss
  • Pain or tingling in the hands and/or feet
  • Weak

People with prolonged exposure to lead may also be at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and reduced fertility, and even death. Several of English socialites life were taken due to lead poisoning, one of them being Maria, Countess of Coventry, who died of blood-poisoning in 1760 during her late 20s. Even though the dangers of lead is well known, interesting enough, people will still be using it.

Thankfully in this 21st century, more and more products are made using natural and are plant based. An example of a powerful product from Shaklee is the Youth Age Defence Moisturizer with SPF 50 broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen, not only it protects the skin from the harmful UV sun ray, the vitamins and nourishing botanicals moisturises the skin and improve the overall appearance of skin tone. Another one of Youth’s powerful product is the Radiance C+E with a patented dose of 20% pure vitamin C and vitamin E plus raspberry cell extract to plump, brighten, and visibly reduce the appearance of scars, lines and wrinkles. It also reduces the appearance of age spots, smoothens the skin, and like the Age Defence Moisturizer, it also improves overall skin tone.

The Shaklee Youth range does not stop at sunscreen and beauty serum, their other products include gel oil cleanser, perfecting toner, eye treatment, serum and an advanced night cream! Why Vivix is All You Need.

In the last post, we talked about polyphenols and its wonderful anti-aging, cell-renewal properties. Amazing, right? So today, we are going to dive into getting to know a product by Shaklee that is filled with polyphenols which is called, resveratrol. You might read this post and be questioning, what in the world is resveratrol? No worries, we’ll get into that soon so just read on! That product would be Vivix. What is Vivix? Vivix patent pending and is only exclusive to Shaklee and is a botanical beverage containing Shaklee’s pwn botanical blend of three (3) major ingredients;- Muscadine Grape Extract, European Elderberry Extract, Japanese Knotweed Extract and Purple Carrot Extract. Each ingredient are selected carefully for its benefits and functionality to ensure the product really does what it is meant to do and provide outcome with maximum satisfaction. We will go further into the benefits and what each ingredient contributes to the success of Shaklee’s own world’s best anti-aging elixir.

What is resveratrol and why is it the major component that aids anti-aging supplements? Resveratrol is often referred to as the most active ingredient in red wine but there is not enough dose of resveratrol in a glass of wine to make a difference. To get the benefits of what a thirty (30) days’ supply of Vivix, you’d need to consume three thousand (3000) glasses of wine, which will cost you roughly around RM7800 – RM10,000 per month and it will also cost you your health, because drinking 450 liter of wine a month is just too much and it will burn out your liver! While Vivix will cost you less than 1k a month and you’d get all the anti-aging benefits and properties and not having to sacrifice the health of your organs. So that is why, resveratrol found in Vivix has strong antioxidant activity. Plants create resveratrol to protect themselves against the stress of their environment. Plus, it has also been shown that resveratrol aids in fighting cancer cells, reduces the oxidation of bad cholesterol, total cholesterol and the lowering the chances and risk of cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies on animals have shown resveratrol dramatically increases life span, and athletic endurance which gives you a longer, and fuller life.

Now, let us discuss the wonderful ingredients in Vivix. Native to North Carolina, the muscadine grape is the only grape in nature with an extra chromosome. They are fat free, high in fiber and they are high in antioxidants, especially ellagic acid and resveratrol. Ellagic acids has anti-carcinogenic properties in the colon, lungs and liver. Meanwhile the resveratrol in the grape is reported to lower cholesterol levels and the risk of coronary heart. Eating the fruit alone, in desserts, sauces or juice can give health benefits. The European elderberry is used by Native American and European herbalist for hundreds of years for their health benefits.

Like the muscadine grape, elderberry contains antioxidants and contains components that helps relieve colds, combat the flu and boost the immune system, as well as to heal other respiratory infections. Fruit of the Sambucus tree, the tree has clusters of small white or cream elderflowers and bunches of small blue or black elderberries. Other than being a weapon to keep flu, coughs and other respiratory diseases at bay, the elderberry fruit contains high levels of flavonoids (a type of polyphenol), which means it has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties help to protect healthy cells from harmful free radicals that play a role in skin problems like acne, pigmentations and wrinkles. The American Nutrition Association (ANA) suggested that the use of elderberry face wash helps fight acne because of its antiseptic effects. Due to its high levels of vitamin A, the ANA also reported that elderberries soothe the skin, helps ease and smoothens the appearance of age spots and prevents or reduces wrinkles. Other than its anti-aging goodness, elderberries are also an excellent source of fiber, containing 10.2 g of dietary fiber per cup, which makes up a large amount of the recommended daily intake that contributes to these health benefits: prevent constipation, improve bowel function, protect against colorectal cancer, reduces blood pressure, protect against cardiovascular diseases and lowers blood cholesterol.

Described as tenacious, the Japanese knotweed once planted, the rhizome (root) expands rapidly, pushing out any other plans in its way. It is native to Japan, and also China, but it was carried tp Great Britain and used as a garden ornamental. Herbalist rejoice over the potent herbs contained in the roots of the Japanese knotweed. It has been used for centuries as herbal supplements and an excellent source of resveratrol. Much like muscadine grape and elderberry, japanese knotweed quickly became the preferred source of resveratrol because of its active form of trans-resveratrol. What are the difference? Well, trans-resveratrol is the chemical form of resveratrol best absorbed and utilized by the body. While red grapes are high in resveratrol, it must be converted into trans-resveratrol in the body. Japanese knotweed contains mostly trans-resveratrol, making it the preferred source. Other than its resveratrol goodness, Japanese knotweed contains a wide spectrum of chemical compounds offering herbal benefits. Together with resveratrol, these substances offer potent antioxidants, as well as cardiovascular, nervous system, and liver function support.

Purple carrots are known to provide many of the same benefits as orange carrots, purple carrots offer some extraordinary nutritional benefits due to their high concentration of anthocyanins. Just in case you don’t have a background in nutritional science, like most of us, well, anthocyanins are flavonoid pigments that gives many blue, purple, and black vegetables and berries their intense hues and strong health-boosting properties. According to a lab study, the pigments are the the ones that exert extreme strong antioxidant effects, which is even stronger than Vitamin E analogues. Considering the amount of anthocyanins in a purple carrot, it isn’t surprising that purple carrots have stronger antioxidant activity than its orange cousin. Thanks to their high antioxidant properties and its high level of anthocyanins, purple carrots are known for its anti-carcinogenic effects against colon cancer cells. Other than its protection against colon cancer, the anthocyanins have a strong anti-inflammatory properties which might help alleviate symptoms associated with inflammatory joints such as arthritis, and gout. Furthermore, purple carrots can help improve vascular health. The anthocyanins neutralizes enzymes that destroys connective tissue, by repairing damaged proteins in the blood vessel walls, and finally promote circulation and overall health of the your vascular system.

Now that we have covered the importance of the main ingredients of Vivix, we can simplify the benefits of it in this list below;

  1. Acts as the best antioxidant. Because of its unique blend of polyphenol profile, the combo of ellagitannin and ellagic acid makes it the most potent antioxidant to fight against free radicals in your body. This antioxidant can shield your body from many diseases.

  3. Vivix protects the body from extreme temperature and prevents bacteria growth in their environment so you can prevent infections from infecting your body.
  4. A great anti-aging supplement. Shakles Vivix contains six time the amount of resveratrol compared to red grapes. This substance alone has major impacts on the 4 key mechanisms of cellular aging; a) cell energy, b) cell defense, c) cell repair, and d) cell performance. If all of these mechanisms are protected well, the cellular aging is delayed and you will look younger, longer.
  5. Helps prevent constipation. Due to its high-fiber properties, which aids in absorbing food nutrients into the body.
  6. Helps prevent cancer. Because of its potent antioxidant, Vivix can fight free radicals and prevent diseases, and cancer.

Omega 3 for Beautiful Skin and Healthy Body & Soul

Omega 3 contributes to healthy lifestyle! It has healthy fatty acids that benefits the skin, brain, heart, joint and overall health. Picture from Google.

In order to lead a life full of joy and health, we should know the things we can and should take as we age. Our skin isn’t going to stay all pretty and plump. Our health deteriorates every year we get older. It may not show up externally but we normally do not know exactly what’s happening in our body. Questions after questions pop up in our minds when something happens to us. Our topic for this entry is the infamous OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS. Fatty acids in general brings so much benefits for our health. Before we begin talking about the highly mentioned fatty acid;Omega-3, let’s get to know about it.

Fishes have healthy fats that contributes to overall health! Picture from Google.

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fat which is very much implored for us to take because unsaturated fatty acids basically means healthy ‘fat’. There are three types of Omega-3 fatty acids – DHA, ALA and EPA. Back to basic biology, we know that our body cannot synthesize or produce certain fatty acids, therefore we need to ingest other things such as fishes. These type of fatty acids are called the essential fatty acids. The optimal taking of this Omega-3 fatty acids benefits us in so many ways and they work wonders.

Omega-3 gives the skin a healthy glow and plumps it up. Picture from Google.

The Omega-3 fatty acids can obviously work its magic on our skin because our skin are composed of a biological material called the plasma membrane. One of the constituent element that makes up the skin is called the phospholipid bi-layer which consists of many types of proteins. The Omega-3 fatty acids help make this bi-layer hold onto water, leading to a moisturized and soft skin – skin gets more plump and baby like. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help the infamous mental disorder – Depression. Some researchers have found that cultures that eat foods with high levels of omega-3s have lower levels of depression. Fish oil also seems to boost the effects of antidepressants and may help the depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Healthy heart, healthy life! Picture from Google.

Our heart, our all-time worker tends to be sick due to our ignorance towards our diet. Unsaturated fatty acids has a high level of LDL (low density lipoprotein) which can decrease the ‘bad fats’ or saturated fatty acids in our blood vessels. You must be wondering how the ‘bad fats’ can affect our heart. Saturated fats normally accumulate at the wall of our artery, making it hard for oxygen enriched blood to pass through. This is the situation that normally causes atherosclerosis that can result to the most famous, most dangerous and despicable; HEART ATTACK and STROKE . Omega-3 fatty acids can also regulate our blood pressure level and triglycerides which makes up lipids like cholesterol. Shouldn’t we consider our heart that works 24 hours for seven days without resting. Should it rest, you know you will regret it. That’s exactly why we should be more vigilant towards our diet and take a healthy diet that consists of fatty acids like the Omega-3 fatty acids.

Healthy mommy, healthy baby. Picture from Google.

Mothers and future mothers should know that omega-3 fatty acids are very crucial to ensure the good health of a baby after it is born. Omega-3 fatty in breast milk supports the baby’s brain developments and its immune functions. To mothers, the well being and health of their baby is a top priority. The taking of omega-3 fatty acids optimally helps the baby grow healthy and well. Food that has a high content of omega-3 fatty acids are like mackerels, salmons, cod liver oil, herring, oysters and more! What’s life without food right?

OmegaGuard by Shaklee.

All in all, Omega-3 fatty acids clearly help us in heightening our health thus resulting in a stronger barrier against diseases and unwanted health problems. The taking of Shaklee’s product, Omega Guard can totally complete our day due to its benefits and advantages that secures our daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids.
