Sleep is that kind of luxury not all are lucky enough to have. ENOUGH SLEEP that is. You know, 7-8 hours kinda sleep, not 0-3 hours sleep then no sleep. Insomnia can leave the person feeling satisfied with their sleep and will experience one or more of these symptoms: fatigue, low energy, difficulty concentrating and focusing, mood disturbance, and decreased performance in work or at school. Yeap, children get them too. Anybody can be affected by this condition and it may cause by various reasons.

Insomnia may be characterized based on its phase and duration. Acute insomnia is brief and often happens because of life circumstances; like for example, when you can’t fall asleep the night before a big presentation, interview or exams, or after receiving stressful or bad news, but also in some cases, where you are overly excited over a good news. Many people may have experienced this type of passing sleep disruption, and it tends to resolve without any treatment.

The second type of insomnia is the worst and can cause unhealthy side effects. Chronic insomnia is disrupted sleep that occurs at least three nights per week and lasts at least three months. Chronic insomnia disorders can have many causes. Changes in the environment, unhealthy sleep habits, shift work, other clinical disorders, and certain medications could lead to a long-term pattern of insufficient sleep. People with chronic insomnia may benefit from some form of treatment to help them get back to healthy sleep patterns.

Insomnia is more common in women than in men. If affects 6% to 10% of adults. Although this is the most common sleep disorder, yet it often goes undiagnosed and untreated, which may lead to other ailments. In a recent study, insomnia is linked to a high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, diabetes and other chronic illness.

It is always best to treat early signs of insomnia, rather than wait and it will get worst. Here are some tips on how to allow you to have a good night’s rest;

  1. Get some exercises done during the day, preferable in the evening.
  2. Relax before going to bed at night. Stop doing vigorous activities an hour before bed time to ensure your body is in a relaxed state.
  3. Schedule your sleeping time and try to keep it consistent.
  4. Do activities that will make you sleepy; such as reading, drinking warm milk or listen to soothing music.
  5. Make sure your bedroom is comfortable; turn off the lights, turn on a night light if you feel uncomfortable being in a dark room, ensure the temperature of your room is just nice, 22 degrees Celcius is the ideal temperature for sleeping, and wear loose clothing.
  6. Avoid caffeine, smoking and alcohol hours before bedtime.

But as we advance with age, most people result to sleeping pills to allow them to sleep soundly throughout the night.
